Aubrey Plaza once said that her husband Jeff Baena received ‘death threats in his DMs’ after they got married.
The couple had been together since 2011 and married for three years before his death at age 47 in January 2025.
The 40-year-old actress previously spoke about how some of her most devout fans had inappropriate reactions to her tying the knot with Baena in 2020.
She shared insight into some appalling and erroneous correspondence her husband received after they decided to get married spontaneously.
‘Oh my God. Jeff got death threats in his DMs,’ she previously told Cosmopolitan in 2022 when the interviewer noted that her bisexual fans were saddened to learn of the nuptials.
‘People project so much stuff onto marriage, but it wasn’t some big statement I’m trying to make where I want everybody to react to it,’ she added.

A year earlier, she had opened up about how they had secretly tied the knot to celebrate their 10-year dating anniversary while in lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic.
During a December 2021 appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, she recounted how their out-of-the-ordinary matrimony occurred.
‘A lot of things happened during COVID for me. Yes, we got married. Big deal,’ she said.
‘We got a little bored one night. We got married and I’ll tell you how: Onehourmarriage.com. That’s real, look it up.’
She also recounted how they wore matching tie-dye pajamas that Baena had made for them.
‘We were in the lockdown,’ she explained. ‘Things got a little crazy, especially in my house.
‘My husband got really into tie-dying and when I say tie-dying, I mean 50 shirts a day.’
After their spontaneous decision to get married, she recalled how they fast made it happen.

‘I created a very quick love altar in our yard,’ she recalled. ‘Facts of our love, little stones, smoke, fire. Things of that nature.
‘Then the man from Alhambra showed up in a Hawaiian shirt with a briefcase. I can’t remember a lot of it. It was fuzzy, but I’m pretty sure it’s legal.’

Baena’s family told Deadline that they are devastated by the news and are asking for privacy at this time.
Baena and Plaza were last seen together on a hike this past summer, six months before his death.
In July 2024, they were seen enjoying a stroll together in Los Angeles’ Griffith Park.
Baena is survived by his wife, his mother Barbra Stern, stepfather Roger Stern, his stepmother Michele Baena, his brother Brad Baena, and his step siblings Bianca Gabay and Jed Fluxman.
